Books & Beanies: Episodes 4-6

  Episode 4: Beast Boy (Teen Titans), Kami Garcia



Star Rating: 4, Genre: Graphic Novel (chosen for hat color) and Science Fiction, Age Level: YA...This was a pretty solid read and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, since Beast Boy is one of my least favorite characters. I like this take on him, though. Seeing a fresh makeover of his origin story is nice and I hope we get to see Tank and Stella in future stories. I’m also eager to see what Wilson an H.I.V.E. are up to.



 Episode 5: Mismatch, Lovematch, Megan Derr



Star Rating: 5, Genre: Urban Fantasy, brief High Fantasy elements, and LGBTQ romance, Age Level: YA...I went into this book expecting a cozy paranormal romance...what I found was much more. This went beyond that. Though it does have paranormal romance elements, this is an urban fantasy story with a high fantasy base. The author has had experience in multiple fantasy genres, including RPGs. I'm hoping she writes more books like this, because if so I'm about to become severely addicted.




 Episode 6: Coffee, Milk & Spider Silk, Coyote J.M. Edwards

Genre: Cozy Fantasy, Age Level: YA...I think I've accidentally stumbled into a new genre of fantasy. First, it was with an S.L. Roland book, and now this one...which has a sequel involving a lollipop shop. I'm not sure where all these magical creatures wanting to start stores come from, but I'm here for it. Seriously, there is something cozy and addicting about this new brand of fantasy.
Coffee, Milk & Spider Silk is sort of a familiar story in this new genre. A soldier retires and decides to settle down by fulfilling a lifelong dream of owning their own business. What was unique about this book, however, was the characters used in it. The creatures Edwards took and twisted into the main characters were underrated. Some of them I hadn't even heard of...I had to look up what the main character was. And I just wanted to hug the baby minotaurs. I bet they'd be so fluffy!!! Like a baby cow.

The Start of Something New: First Steps to Freelancing

       On July 29, 2022, a 114-year-old newspaper ceased publishing. I worked on this paper for the last year and a half of its life and it was one of the greatest experiences of my existence. It taught me a lot of things. I learned a bunch of programs like InDesign and Adobe Photoshop. It taught me formatting and AP style of writing (which I had the basics of before I started but rarely used). To steal a description from John Green, the paper's end came upon us like sleep, slowly at first and then all at once. Those of us that worked there knew the paper was in trouble. There were times we'd compare it to a sinking ship and ourselves as sailors using buckets to scoop water out of the vessel. I loved that paper, though. With every fiber of my being.       The Gothenburg Times was the first place to give me a writing job full-time. The Alphabet Ancestry (Part I)

      I don't know how into video games you are, but there are four games I play with a dedication so strong that I've literally lost nights of sleep over them. One of these games is Sims. I played Sims 3 long ago, but I'm currently playing Sims 4, and if you're a Sim's player then you know that EA just keeps adding more expansions to this game.      I've played the game so much that I've beaten many of the challenges, yet there was one I have failed to complete several times. The Alphabet Family Challenge. The rules for this challenge are as follows:      1) You must play through 26 generations of the same household.     That's it. That's all the guidelines Sims gives players. Seems simple enough, right? WRONG! Sims is a time-consuming game. Getting to 26 generations takes a long time...and I may have neglected to consider what 'same household' might have meant until I was already a decent way into the challenge.    ...
